When you're standing on the outdoor platform of our Polar Rover, the chill Arctic air feels invigorating. But not as much as the sight of the huge polar bear ambling toward us. Sometimes they are silhouetted against the horizon, slowly moving shadows on the vast expanse of tundra. Other times, we'll see a mother with cubs up close, or young males play-fighting. In Winnipeg, we stay at the Fort Garry Hotel, one of Canada's elegant railway hotels built by the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway in 1913 and long a symbol of this prairie city's importance as a transportation, commerce and culture hub. Located downtown just one block from Union Station, this historic landmark built in French chateau style is Winnipeg's finest hotel, retaining the air of gracious opulence of an earlier era. Relax in the lounge, enjoy a drink in the antique bar, or indulge in a sumptuous treatment at Ten Spa, an authentic Turkish-style bath and spa located on the top floor of the hotel.

Physical Requirements

Easy

A polar bear tour with Natural Habitat Adventures requires very little walking. Travelers must be able to walk up/down stairs. Our Polar Rover vehicles, designed to travel over the tundra for polar bear observation, can sometimes offer a bumpy ride. Travelers must be prepared for below-freezing temperatures and slippery surfaces.

On custom or private departures with smaller groups, our ability to accommodate varying levels of physical abilities or interests is limited, since these trips are staffed with a single Expedition Leader who may be assisted, pending availability, by local guides.

Important Information About This Trip

This flagship polar bear tour has been our most popular adventure for more than two decades. Its longstanding success is due to the outstanding bear viewing opportunities in Churchill, the Polar Bear Capital of the World, as well as the broad introduction the trip offers to the natural and cultural history of the Hudson Bay region and daily life in the Canadian North. The trip includes two-day trips by Polar Rover and a nighttime Rover excursion, complemented by time spent exploring the frontier outpost town of Churchill. All activities are enhanced by expert interpretation and personalized attention from our affable naturalist Expedition Leaders.

Regarding polar bears: They are typically in the Churchill area year-round. The highest concentration occurs in October and November as the bears gather to await freeze-up on Hudson Bay and the beginning of their winter hunting season. But bear viewing is never predictable. Sometimes the best viewing happens at the beginning of the season, sometimes it occurs in the middle, and sometimes it's at the end—we never know for sure. Once the bay freezes, many of the bears depart. Historically, this has happened in early December, but an unusually early cold spell can sometimes occur, hastening their departure to the ice. Please be aware that conditions vary, and polar bears here live wild and free: we can never guarantee that you will see them or promise exactly what your experience will be.

Meals

Please understand that the meals in Churchill are specially planned and prepared well in advance. With ample notice, dietary requirements due to serious medical conditions or strict personal restrictions can be met but must be adhered to during the trip. If you have a very restricted diet, we recommend bringing your preferred snacks along with the understanding that certain foods are limited in this remote part of the world.

Mandatory Insurance

Since the areas we travel to are remote and wild (that's why we go there!), we require that all guests have, at minimum, medical evacuation insurance for this program. This is for the safety of all guests. We require that your chosen independent insurance plan includes at least $250,000 in medical evacuation coverage.

To protect your investment and to provide peace of mind while you travel, we also strongly recommend purchasing comprehensive travel insurance. Plans may cover everything from medical treatment to trip cancellations and delays and lost luggage. Getting There & Getting Home

In case of flight or weather delays, we recommend that you arrive a day early. Please schedule your flights to arrive by 5 pm in order to attend a 7 pm orientation dinner on Day 1 of your program. You are free to depart at any time on the final day.

The Zanji Suite at Tembo Plains

The Zanji Suite at Tembo Plains, one of our Réserve-Collection luxury safari camps, represents the ultimate destination for those seeking a private luxury Zimbabwe safari.

The 2-bedroom private Suite is tucked away into a thick riverine forest on the edge of the Zambezi River in the private 128,000-hectare Sapi Private Reserve, East of Zimbabwe’s Mana Pools National Park.

The Persian word Zanji was a name used by medieval Muslim geographers and traders to refer to the eastern coastline of Africa, which included the Kenyan and Tanzanian coasts, Zanzibar, Madagascar and stretched to the mouth of the Zambezi River.

This word is also the origin of the placename of Zanzibar (“coast of the Zanji”) and the Sea of Zanji. The Sea of Zanji applied to the sea expanses near the eastern portion of the African continent known by ancient Muslim travellers and chroniclers such as Al Masudi and Ibn Battuta.

Zanji also served a dual purpose as a descriptor of the inhabitants along this region of coastline in Africa.

For centuries the coastal settlements were a source of ivory, gold, and, regrettably, slaves. These traders sailed their dhows, using the variations of the Monsoon winds along the African coastline to trade.

Prominent settlements of the Zanji coast included Malindi, Gedi and Mombasa. By the late medieval period, records show that at least 37 notable wealthy Swahili trading towns existed.

Legend has it that these traders from the East were also seeking a mystical city of gold, the source of the gold that was traded. They even went so far as to sail their dhows up the Zambezi River, past the Sapi Reserve, looking for this magical city of gold.

Tembo Plains Camp

Tembo Plains Camp is tucked away into a thick riverine forest on the edge of the Zambezi River. It lies in the private 128,000-hectare Sapi Private Reserve, east of Zimbabwe’s Mana Pools National Park.

When we designed this Réserve-Collection luxury safari camp, it was to reference the famous Zimbabwe Ruins and not lose sight of our love of exploring.

Tembo Plains Camp is a unique combination of canvas and stone walls. The semi-circular walls inside each tented suite isolate the bath and shower from the bedroom and indoor lounge areas. Outside, a pack-stone wall design referencing those Zimbabwe Ruins continues along the back of the guest bedroom. It gives you a greater sense of privacy, which is often an issue in tents.

We didn’t want a completely ‘built room’, so the front of all the guest suites offers uninterrupted views of Zimbabwe’s Zambezi River flowing past.

Tembo Plains Camp has four double or twin-bed configuration suites.

In the main camp’s central area, the wine cellar and interactive 5-star kitchen feature this stone design again. The spa and curio store are each individually hidden discreetly behind beautifully weathered Zanzibar doors.

Moulded around the trees, Selinda Camp visualises five essential elements: Earth, Wind, Water, Fire and Metal. As a result, Selinda Camp has a perfectly natural sense of place and balance.

When Dereck Joubert designed Selinda Camp as a real indoor/outdoor safari experience, he wanted to pay homage primarily to elephants. The art in the camp starts with life-sized elephant skull sculptures as you enter the main area, reflecting the art of his late brother, Keith Joubert.

With only three suites, Selinda Camp is an excellent example of what a perfect luxury safari in Botswana should be like. Each suite is complete with a private open-air verandah and swimming pool—the ensuite bathroom is complete with deep, luxurious brass baths, double vanity basins, a flush loo and indoor showers. Heating and cooling air conditioning facilities are over the sumptuous bed, and the bedroom offers guests a writing desk, coffee and tea-making area, and sufficient wardrobe space.

The camp’s main area has a private and relaxing spa area. Guests can also enjoy a range of treatments in the privacy of their suite.

The private 130,000-hectare Selinda Reserve boasts large elephant herds, regular sightings of the Selinda pack of African wild dogs, and the famous Selinda lion pride recently featured in the National Geographic film “Birth of a Pride” by Dereck and Beverly Joubert.
